A prize-winning memoir, lovingly evoking New Zealand and the coming of age of a much-loved poet. Kevin Ireland leads the reader out the back, through the mangroves, under the bridge and over the moon in this delightful memoir. We meet the characters - for characters they are - who preceded him, give birth to him, laugh with him, fight over him, love and desert him. We explore with him the landscape of his childhood in Takapuna and Cambridge, we are his intrepid companions on fishing expeditions, we share his outrage at the indignities of the education system, and we linger with him over the books that finally become his life. Winner of the history and biography section of the Montana New Zealand Book Awards.

This accessible and insightful book merges Lacanian theory, psychoanalytic case studies, and the author’s personal experiences to illuminate the relevance of Lacanian psychoanalysis in mapping contemporary subjectivity. Using examples from cinema, artificial intelligence, and clinical and cultural references, the book covers major topics within the field, including dreams, the mirror phase, psychosis, hysteria, the position of the analyst, the drive, supervision and the symptom. Each is set within the context of our technologically oriented, market-based society and complemented with empirical vignettes. The book’s final section examines contemporary society and radicalization. This book is intended to be an encouragement to all readers that no matter how difficult life is, we can always trust the Lord and know that He will be there for us and help us through tough times. As you read my story, you will see that I had a very difficult childhood with abuse and a self-destructing young adulthood with alcoholism and constant fighting. However, with God’s help I was able to run away from darkness and find shelter in His mercy. Throughout my life I have had a lot of fear, sadness, and depression because of my father’s abuse, but God was always there with me. Although during my childhood I did not believe in God, now I know that He protected me all the time. I could have died many times due to the abuse, but I am still alive. When I learned about God and accepted Him as my personal Savior, my life took a 180 degree turn for the better. From a drunkard and a street fighter I became a sincere Christian who loves everybody. God also blessed me with a wonderful wife, and I am so thankful for that. I cannot praise the Lord enough for all the things that He has done for me. With the Lord’s help I was able to overcome the difficulties. I did it and you can do it, too! Just believe in Jesus as your personal Savior, and you will see the positive changes in your life.

Who could have anticipated the vicissitudes of the last year? And while the stark changes in our lives were pulling us together as a society, as we coped with what was unfolding, the quieter, often isolated time that followed allowed many to focus on writing. Lockdowns across the country may have created all kinds of problems for different people, but one of the positives that seems to have been unlocked across our county, and very probably across the country, was our individual creative potential. These pages are just one example of those isolated endeavours coming together into a collective expression of individual experience. This anthology is an incredibly unique publication, not only for how it documents this strange moment in time, but more importantly for how it reminds us of our need to explore, unravel, pose ‘what-ifs’, in order to make sense of the world: and the benefits of writing for our own wellbeing.

“[You’re Accepted] is wonderfully written, in a style that will appeal to everyone involved in the process—student, parent, guidance counselor.” —Elizabeth Lesser, cofounder of the Omega Institute and New York Times bestselling author of Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow Students may worry about SATs and grades, but university admissions coach Katie Malachuk knows that it takes much more than numbers to chart the right path to college. To help applicants (and their families) make enlightened decisions, she transforms the application process into one of self-discovery, rather than self-delusion. Katie’s approach strips away the destructive, competitive energy and replaces it with revelations about how to uncover your innate talents and true self. With great humor and insight, You’re Accepted makes a convincing case that presenting the real, authentic you (not some smooth, packaged version) actually increases your chances of getting into college. The former admissions director shares insider tips on everything from writing essays to seeing things from the admissions committee’s point of view. You’re Accepted brings higher fulfillment to higher education by helping you get into the college that’s right for you—the one that will help you become the person you’re meant to be.
