Marvin was raised by parents that are passionate for God. In his childhood, he was exposed to several people that were themselves examples of true disciples. In High School, he stopped struggling against the tug of God and became a follower of Jesus. Out of his love for God he has been a worship leader for many years. In the winter of 2016 God began to stir his heart to a deeper walk. In February of 2017 he resigned his position as Worship Pastor to take sabbatical for the refreshment of his body and spirit. It was the preface to what he and his wife have dubbed, “the year of the unexpected”. In the summer of 2017, Marvin began an intentional pursuit of God that would eclipse his previous efforts at discipleship. This is the diary of his walk, originally intended for his children, but at their urging, for any that could be encouraged by it.

In the first multi-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln to be published in decades, Lincoln scholar Michael Burlingame offers a fresh look at the life of one of America's greatest presidents. Incorporating the field notes of earlier biographers, along with decades of research in multiple manuscript archives and long-neglected newspapers, this remarkable work will both alter and reinforce current understanding of America's sixteenth president. Volume 1 covers Lincoln's early childhood, his experiences as a farm boy in Indiana and Illinois, his legal training, and the political ambition that led to a term in Congress in the 1840s. In volume 2, Burlingame examines Lincoln's life during his presidency and the Civil War, narrating in fascinating detail the crisis over Fort Sumter and Lincoln's own battles with relentless office seekers, hostile newspaper editors, and incompetent field commanders. Burlingame also offers new interpretations of Lincoln's private life, discussing his marriage to Mary Todd and the untimely deaths of two sons to disease. But through it all—his difficult childhood, his contentious political career, a fratricidal war, and tragic personal losses—Lincoln preserved a keen sense of humor and acquired a psychological maturity that proved to be the North's most valuable asset in winning the Civil War. Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, this landmark publication establishes Burlingame as the most assiduous Lincoln biographer of recent memory and brings Lincoln alive to modern readers as never before.

After I finished writing this book, I found myself noting or recognizing the stories, essays, and poems found in this book tell the story of my life. The book in short provides a look into my philosophy of life and the wisdom I use (and have used) to survive and live in a white man’s world, without going crazy or giving up. As the public reads my short essays, stories, and poems, I hope the message found in my written works will help them see and feel why I stay connected to my people and their wisdom, a wisdom that has taught me to always stay connected to mother earth and my people’s “Red Road.” I want to note the stories, essays, and poems found in my book come from both published works and works I never sent in to get published. I hope the wide range of topics found in this collection will not only touch my readers but they will also challenge them to see life under a new light, a “modern-day Red-Man’s light.” Since this book is a collection of many published and unpublished works, I felt it was best to not separate this book into chapters. I made this choice because I feel each essay, story, prose, and poem is powerful enough to stand on its own. As my readers work their way through my book, I hope they will take the time to stop and think about the message found in each written work and hopefully, in some cases, find themselves reconnecting with the land that is America and my people’s wisdom that says, “We are one with mother earth,” and “we are all born to die because life is a circle like the Native American Medicine Wheel.”

Alfred Perkins was an ordinary young man who grew up in the small English village of Carlisle. When he was a boy his godfather, old Oliver Cyning, used to tell him stories about Elfland, the place where all the fairies, elves, gnomes, goblins, and more lived. Alfred grew up believing in those stories. One day, Mr. Cyning told Alfred they had to stop spending time together. Eventually, Alfred stopped believing. Now Alfred has returned home from university and has made the startling discovery that his godfather had not lied to him and that now his fate, along with that of the village, was tied to that of Elfland and it was Alfred's job to save them both.

This is the first comprehensive collection of remarks attributed to Abraham Lincoln by his contemporaries. Much of what is known or believed about the man comes from such utterances, which have been an important part of Lincoln biography. About his mother, for instance, he never wrote anything beyond supplying a few routine facts, but he can be quoted as stating orally that she was the illegitimate daughter of a Virginia aristocrat. Similarly, there is no mention of Ann Rutledge in any of his writings, but he can be quoted as saying when he was president-elect, “I did honestly and truly love the girl and think often, often of her now.” Did Lincoln make a conditional offer to evacuate Fort Sumter in April 1861? Did he personally make the decision to restore General McClellan to army command in September 1862? To whom did he first reveal his intention to issue an emancipation proclamation? Did he label the Gettysburg address a failure right after delivering it? Did he, just a few days before his assassination, dream of a president lying dead in the White House? All of these questions, and many others, arise from recollective quotations of Lincoln, and the answer in each instance depends upon how one appraises the reliability of such recollection.

A deeply moving novel about a woman who thought she never wanted to be a mother—and the many ways that life can surprise us “An ode to possibility” — The Washington Post Rose Napolitano is fighting with her husband, Luke, about prenatal vitamins. She promised she'd take them, but didn't. He promised before they got married that he'd never want children, but now he's changed his mind. Their marriage has come to rest on this one question: Can Rose find it in herself to become a mother? Rose is a successful professor and academic. She's never wanted to have a child. The fight ends, and with it their marriage. But then, Rose has a fight with Luke about the vitamins--again. This time the fight goes slightly differently, and so does Rose's future as she grapples with whether she can indeed give up the one thing she thought she knew about herself. Can she reimagine her life in a completely new way? That reimagining plays out again and again in each of Rose's nine lives, just as it does for each of us as we grow into adulthood. What are the consequences of our biggest choices? How would life change if we let go of our preconceived ideas of ourselves and became someone completely new? Rose Napolitano's experience of choosing and then choosing again shows us in an utterly compelling way what it means, literally, to reinvent a life and, sometimes, become a different kind of woman than we ever imagined. A stunning novel about love, loss, betrayal, divorce, death, a woman's career and her identity, The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano is about finding one's way into a future that wasn't the future one planned, and the ways that fate intercedes when we least expect it.
