Guinea pigs are one of the world’s most popular pets—small, friendly, easy to care for, and unbearably cute. We have felt this way for a long time: guinea pigs were first domesticated in 5000 B.C.E. Since then they have inspired historical figures ranging from the scientist William Harvey to the artists Jan Brueghel and Beatrix Potter. In this book, Dorothy Yamamoto offers the first in-depth treatment of this cuddly little creature over the several millennia it has been a part of our lives. Yamamoto examines the role guinea pigs have today—as pets—but also looks back to less loving times when guinea pigs were put to more direct use. She discusses them as a crucial sacrificial offering to Incan gods, as the entrée in the Cusco Cathedral’s painting of The Last Supper, and as a highly favored experimental subject—for which they have become the quintessential metaphor for anyone in the same unfortunate circumstance. Threading her account with examples from the guinea pig’s many appearances in literature and art, Yamamoto reveals the personality and cultural importance of an animal we have always wanted to keep nearby, providing a fun and unique book for any animal lover. Dr. BRUNO BLOCH, professor of the Dermatological clinic of Zurich, began a new era of eczema research by attempting to sensitize guinea pigs to primula. It was during this period that I had the pleasure of being Dr. BLOCH's chief resident, and could observe these experiments. It was only in 1955 that Dr. E. BUJARD, professor of Histology of the University of Geneva, Dr. R. BRUN, chief of laboratories of my Dermatology Department and I began to work in the field of experimental eczema on the nipples and flanks of guinea pigs. Besides these collaborators, to whom I am very grateful, a few others have participated in our experiments. Among these new co-workers the most im portant was Mrs. NICOLE HUNZIKER, chief resident of my clinic. From 1960 on, she worked on the eczema experiments with guinea pigs. Our research has been conside rably advanced by Dr. HUNZIKER. Untill now we have published 30 communica tions on this subject, but the publications about our results have been very short. It now seemed appropriate to publish a monograph and Dr. HUNZIKER undertook this very toilsome task. I would like to take this occasion to thank her for her many years of collaboration both in the clinic and in the laboratory. I am also very grateful to Professor BUJARD who, in spite of the fact that he is retired, continues to work with us. We continually profit from his great experience. Dr.

This book summarizes the development and statistical validation of a guinea pig model as an alternative for potency testing of the viral antigens included in combined vaccines applied in cattle to control the respiratory, reproductive, and neonatal calf diarrhea syndromes. The model allows, in one serum sample, to test the vaccine quality for all the viral antigens included in aqueous as well as in oil-adjuvanted formulations of bovine vaccines. The methodology proposed for the control of bovine herpes virus, parainfluenza, and rotavirus were recommended by CAMEVET as guidelines for the 30 countries in the forum, including the US. Key Features Reviews combined vaccines used for cattle Summarizes animal models used for vaccine testing Focuses on bovine herpesviruses, rotaviruses, parainfluenza, and bovine viral diarrhea virus Provides guidance on the effectiveness of the Guinea Pig model for testing vaccine immunogenicity

The triumphs of recent biology - understanding hereditary disease, the modern theory of evolution - are all thanks to the fruit fly, the guinea pig, the zebra fish and a handful of other organisms, which have helped us unravel one of life's greatest mysteries - inheritance. Jim Endersby traces his story from Darwin hand-pollinating passion flowers in his back garden in an effort to find out whether his decision to marry his cousin had harmed their children, to today's high-tech laboratories, full of shoals of shimmering zebra fish, whose bodies are transparent until they are mature, allowing scientists to watch every step as a single fertilised cell multiples to become millions of specialised cells that make up a new fish. Each story has - piece by piece - revealed how DNA determines the characteristics of the adult organism. Not every organism was as cooperative as the fruit fly or zebra fish, some provided scientists with misleading answers or encouraged them to ask the wrong questions.

'This book speaks to two of the most diametrically opposed yet mutually supportive aspects of war: the ability to inflict horrific injury and the ability to heal Mayhew is to be commended on an outstanding addition to expanding our knowledge of an area rarely discussed by historians. Her book should be mandatory reading for all defence members (both civilian and military) and on everyone's history shelf. This book is highly recommended.' Airforce MagazineThe history of the Guinea Pig Club, the band of airmen who were seriously burned in aeroplane fires, is a truly inspiring, spine-tingling tale.Plastic surgery was in its infancy before the Second World War. The most rudimentary techniques were only known to a few surgeons worldwide. The Allies were tremendously fortunate in having the maverick surgeon Archibald McIndoe nicknamed the Boss or the Maestro operating at a small hospital in East Grinstead in the south of England. McIndoe constructed a medical infrastructure from scratch. After arguing with his superiors, he set up a revolutionary new treatment regime. Uniquely concerned with the social environment, or holistic care , McIndoe also enlisted the help of the local civilian population. He rightly secured his group of patients dubbed the Guinea Pig Club an honoured place in society as heroes of Britain s war. For the first time official records have been used to explain fully how and why this remarkable relationship developed between the Guinea Pig Club, the RAF and the Home Front.First-person recollections bring to life the heroism of the airmen with incredible clarity. This is a revised and expanded edition with new material, including a foreword by HRH Prince Harry, published to tie in with a major new film expected to be released in late 2018.
