An analogy is a comparison between two things. It points out the similarities between two things that might be different in all other respects. Analogies cause us to think analytically about forms, uses, structures, and relationships. First Time Analogies is the ideal launching pad to start nonreaders on the road to real thinking experiences with these pictorial and symbolic analogies that are both challenging and motivating. The book is divided into four sections that let you introduce analogies in a developmental way. The levels are: recognizing relationships; choosing one item to complete the analogy; given two items, choosing two other items that have the same relationships; and pairing up four items to complete two related pairs. Exercises are presented on worksheets that require circling the correct answer, as well as cutting out pictures and pasting them in the correct spaces. Attractive illustrations will draw students into the engaging exercises. Although they think they are just solving fun puzzles, they will be doing serious thinking and building a basis for future experiences in critical thinking. This is the first in a series of books that introduce analogies at varying difficulties and formats. The other books are Analogies for Beginners, Analogies for the 21st Century, Thinking Through Analogies, and Advancing Though Analogies. Grades K-2

In this book, Dr Ted Bailey uses his research to offer an analogical approach, which can guide and inspire teachers and trainers, both new and experienced, in their daily practice. Using analogies to explain things is implicitly part and parcel of our everyday communication so it makes sense to apply them when introducing new or complex ideas or skills. Drawing an analogy from the daily experience of students acts as a shortcut between what is familar to them and the unknown target, a key that can unlock any barriers to learning and often triggers later recall. The discussion is in two parts: practical and theoretical. The former includes a selection of analogies organised alphabetically for convenience, used by practitioners in varied learning contexts and from other sources and evaluates them. The underlying theory part is expressed in plain language and presents several inductive and deductive analogical models successfully applied and acting as solutions for further application. The author appeals to all educators, particularly those in high schools, colleges, or universities, to develop a repertoire of apposite analogies to help bridge learning difficulties and apply them whenever and wherever possible to the benefit of their students.

Metaphors show students how to make connections between the concrete and the abstract, prior knowledge and unfamiliar concepts, and language and image. But teachers must learn how to use metaphors and analogies strategically and for specific purposes, helping students discover and deconstruct effective comparisons. Metaphors & Analogies is filled with provocative illustrations of metaphors in action and practical tips.

Noncommutative geometry is a novel approach which is opening up new possibilities for geometry from a mathematical viewpoint. It is also providing new tools for the investigation of quantum space-time in physics. Recent developments in string theory have supported the idea of quantum spaces, and have strongly stimulated the research in this field. This self-contained volume contains survey lectures and research articles which address these issues and related topics. The book is accessible to both researchers and graduate students beginning to study this subject.

Research that deals with metaphors and linguistic imagery has increased in the last thirty years. However, studies that question existing theories of metaphor from a comparative perspective are less common. The reason for the present theoretical sketch was the metaphorical model of conceptualism, alias the cognitive theory of metaphor: at least with this theory, `metaphor' itself has become a metaphor, and the classical, rhetorical metaphor has been sidelined. Kessler's book not only criticises existing theories of metaphor, but also develops from them a discursive synthesis that seeks to rehabilitate the classical metaphor as an everyday pragmalinguistic phenomenon. For this purpose, the nature of thought, the mental lexicon, predication and word semantics are also covered.

This book describes the emergence of new meanings in two languages, English and Chinese. Drawing on a corpus methodology, it presents metaphors as a basic instrument of thinking and cognition studies from a conceptual metaphor perspective, probing the compositional potentiality of “light” in English and Chinese, and highlighting the generative mechanism for word composition through metaphorization. The monograph includes detailed discussions of linguistic corpus construction, linguistic manifestations of metaphorization, the main motivation for the formation of metaphorical meanings, and socio-cultural influence in different languages. It expands the scope of previous studies and shows how conceptual metaphor studies can benefit from the use of a corpus methodology by providing not just a description, but an explanation, of how word composition develops. This book will be of interest to students and researchers interested in metaphor and intercultural studies, as well as cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics and contrastive studies in English and Chinese.
