This book is a guide to current research and debate in the field of literacies practice and education. It provides both an historical and lifespan view of the field as well as an overview of research methodologies with first-hand examples from a range of researchers involved in literacy research.
This rhetoric with readings invites students to explore the conversations and literacy practices of the various communities they participate in and to apply the understandings they gain to writing, reading, and research in academic settings. Exploring Literacy presents a model of literacy situated in communities and the experiences of readers and writers within them. Students are invited to explore their own experiences in these communities while adopting the reading and writing practices of the academic communities they are entering. Combining the elements of a reader, a rhetoric, research guide, and handbook, it offers an introduction to the sustained inquiry that underlies most academic work. Each chapter focuses on one primary reading selection and demonstrates a process that builds critical response skills. Students are taught effective ways of engaging with different kinds of texts-memoirs, short fiction, ethnographic writings, academic essays-and offered extensive instruction on how to use writing to enrich their involvement with texts.

Rapidly evolving digital technologies are reciprocally linked to the way people think, learn, generate knowledge, create, communicate, and collaborate in the digital age. These media-communicative and related sociocultural changes must be acknowledged in the educational context. The aim of the present study is, from a transnational perspective, to investigate experts’ anticipated L1 education futures in 2030 and teachers’ literacies deemed necessary in this context. The research aims are addressed through an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design reflected in the application of a three-round modified Delphi study. The panel is drawn from individuals who are considered experts at the intersection of (L1) education and digitalisation and are selected on their theoretical or applied expertise and their interest in the issue under investigation. It becomes clear that the experts emphasised the need for transformations regarding traditional structures, practices, and processes of teaching and learning by 2030, specifically given contemporary practices and forms of learning, thinking, and working in the digital age.

This book is based on an in-depth ethnographic study of the National Adult Literacy Programme (NALP) in Malawi. It highlights the significance of exploring power and identity in literacy studies. Employing the concept of 'figured worlds' to study literacy as a social practice, the book focuses on understanding power relationships and identities in literacy practices. It illustrates how literacy identities and power relationships of some local community members continuously vary from one context to another and, in some cases, even within the same context. Using notions such as agency, artefact, resistance, shame and positioning, the book demonstrates the potential of the concept of figured worlds to address some of the questions raised within the New Literacy Studies – especially those concerning power and identity. The book also illustrates the value of an ethnographic approach in adult literacy studies, by exploring the challenges faced by the researcher in gaining access to community members' activities, and the opportunity to experience first-hand what instructors go through in facilitating adult literacy lessons.
