Le California Verbal Learning Test est destiné à l'évaluation de la mémoire épisodique. Il est utile auprès des personnes souffrant d'une affection neurologique ou psychiatrique avec déficit mnésique d'intensité légère à modérée, aussi bien qu'auprès d'adultes âgés normaux. En regard des tests traditionnellement utilisés, le CVLT permet d'obtenir des indications précises sur la nature des troubles mnésiques observés, tout en bénéficiant d'une bonne faisabilité pour l'examen des sujets âgés normaux et des sujets avec déficit cognitif d'intensité légère. Le CVLT comprend plusieurs étapes : - l'apprentissage en 5 essais d'une liste de 16 mots correspondant à 4 catégories sémantiques ; pour chaque essai, le sujet est invité à effectuer un rappel libre puis indicé des mots de la liste, - l'apprentissage en 1 essai d'une autre liste de 16 mots à rappeler librement ; celle-ci sert de liste interférente par rapport à la première, - le rappel différé de la première liste : en rappel libre et en rappel indicé, - une épreuve de reconnaisance à long terme L'inclusion dans l'épreuve de plusieurs types de rappel (libre, indicé, en reconnaissance) permet de comparer les modalités de récupération de l'information. Par ailleurs, le CVLT permet d'étudier les stratégies mises en oeuvre au cours de l'apprentissage et de mieux évaluer leur sensibilité aux interférences. Les Indices calculés constituent des résultats très complets, en termes quantitatifs comme en terme qualitatifs. Le praticien dispose : - de mesures de rappel (rappel libre immédiat, rappel libre et indicé à court et long terme). - de caractéristiques de l'apprentissage (regroupement sémantique, sériel, effets de récence et de primauté, progression de l'apprentissage). - de caractéristiques des erreurs ( persévérations, intrusions). - de mesures de reconnaissance (reconnaissances correctes et fausses, discriminabilité, biais de réponse). - de mesures de contrastes (comparaison d'indices deux à deux).
