Conversational Agents (CAs) are changing the way people interact in their daily lives. Specifically, CAs such as chatbots or voice assistants are increasingly covering services traditionally provided by human employees. CA-based services are available at any time and in any capacity, providing convenience and comfort while overcoming the limitations of human employees. However, many CAs are imperfect and prone to errors, such as frequently misinterpreting users’ requests, which leads to a mismatch between the expectations of the service and the service provided. As a result, some CA-based services have been discontinued in the past. In this context, a human-like design of CAs potentially offers a valuable approach to enhancing the user’s perception of a service. Prior research shows that this leads to individuals interacting with a human-like CA as if they would interact with a real individual. Furthermore, human-like errors could be considered a social cue, since it is human nature to make errors. To address the overall research area of CAs imperfections, four studies were conducted and synthesized in this dissertation. The studies provide novel insights into the design of human-like text-based CAs interrelated with the occurrence of CA imperfections, including human-like errors. Through a set of experiments, four major contributions are provided. First, the human-like design of imperfect CAs can mitigate the negative individuals’ perceptions, if implemented carefully. Second, the human-like design of imperfect CAs can shift individuals into a positive emotional state which increases service satisfaction. Third, human-like errors are not perceived as human-like and should not be employed in CA-based service encounters at present. Fourth, not every CA-based service requires a high level of human-like design, as the expectations of a CA-based service may be as different as the expectations of traditional human-based services.

This thesis is focusing on three little-explored contextual conditions that are important for a better understanding of digital platform ecosystems: digital platforms in a nascent stage of maturity, digital platforms built by incumbents, and digital platforms embedded in the IoT phenomenon. Thus, the thesis contributes to the question of how established companies navigating nascent digital platform ecosystems in the IoT. The work builds and contributes to the literature on digital platform ecosystems. Three main contributions are made through explorative qualitative research in the form of Delphi and case studies as well as through systematic literature research on the above-mentioned themes: First, the thesis synthesizes important knowledge about the nascent stage of digital platform ecosystems and identifies value co-creation challenges specific to this early maturity stage. Second, given the increasing importance of established companies in the platform discourse, this thesis identifies the intra- and inter-organizational challenges that incumbent organizations face in building digital platform ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of the organizational type in building a platform ecosystem. Third, the dissertation positions platforms in the IoT as a new digital platform instantiation within the scholarly platform discourse and outlines important phoneme-related characteristics that determine value creation.

The widespread diffusion of digital, connected objects such as smartphones or tablets as well as the increasing integration of computing and connectivity capabilities into everyday artifacts like TVs and cars have significantly changed individual behavior in recent decades: it has become the norm to interact with technology and to be connected with online resources regardless of time and place. Social interactions have increasingly become intertwined with technology, making it almost impossible to fully participate in everyday life activities without IT. As a final example, with the integration of network connectivity, digital technologies, products, and services are not used in isolation anymore, but working together as assemblages, thereby expanding the range of what they and their users can do. Overall, we have witnessed that IT has become deeply socially embedded in everyday life and routines. Understanding individual behavior has a long tradition in information systems research. However, given the fundamental changes in recent years related to technology use, it is questionable whether traditional models and theories are still applicable in the digital age. The goal of this dissertation is to address respective shortcomings. As a first step, a comprehensive review of the literature on digital transformation is performed for a better understanding of this phenomenon surrounding the changes we have witnessed regarding individual behavior. Afterwards, new concepts to explain and measure individual behavior and expectations related to connected objects are developed and examined. Furthermore, as the topic of connected objects is closely connected to the concept of personalization, a design study is performed that 1) provides an artifact to handle the efficiency-personalization trade-off in the provision of firm offerings and 2) illustrates how personalization influences the user perceptions of respective products and services. Based on the findings, a framework for the study of connected objects is synthesized and presented. Overall, the findings of this dissertation have relevant implications for research and practice in the fields of technology acceptance, digital life, and digital transformation.

Um diese Herausforderung näher zu beleuchten und Lösungsansätze zu evaluieren, wurden vier Studien durchgeführt und in dieser kumulativen Dissertation zusammengestellt. Diese Studien geben Einblicke in die Besonderheiten der Wissensintegration im Kontext digitaler Innovationen und fördern das Verständnis dafür, wie etablierte Unternehmen die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen bewältigen können. In the age of digitalization, companies need to adapt their processes, products, and business models to maintain their capability to innovate and thus to ensure their competitiveness. As a result, companies need to renew their existing competencies by integrating new and valuable knowledge from the digital sphere. However, this poses a significant managerial challenge, especially for established companies, as the convergent and generative nature of digital innovation not only makes the process of knowledge integration more dynamic, but also increases the diversity and amount of knowledge that needs to be integrated across organizational boundaries. To shed more light on this challenge and evaluate possible solutions, four studies were conducted and compiled in this cumulative dissertation. These studies provide insights into the unique nature of knowledge integration in the context of digital innovation and advance the understanding of how incumbent firms can address the associated challenges. In the research project NEDS – Sustainable Energy Supply Lower Saxony, conceivable transition paths towards a power supply based on renewable energies in Lower Saxony by 2050 are developed and examined for their sustainability and feasibility. Both the different technical focal points and the joint development of methods and models represent important aspects of the project. A comprehensive method for the integrated development and evaluation of energy scenarios is developed and applied to Lower Saxony. As a basic framework, five future scenarios for the target year 2050 are developed. Based on the qualitative future scenarios and three chosen alternatives, quantitative assumptions are made for the simulation and evaluation. The simulation results of the system model form the basis for the system evaluation. Defined system states for the transition years are simulated and then compared using a multi-criteria decision analysis based on sustainability criteria. In dem Forschungsprojekt NEDS – Nachhaltige Energieversorgung Niedersachsen werden denkbare Transitionspfade hin zu einer auf erneuerbaren Energien basierenden Stromversorgung in Niedersachsen bis 2050 entwickelt und auf ihre Nachhaltigkeit und Umsetzbarkeit untersucht. Sowohl die unterschiedlichen fachlichen Schwerpunkte als auch die gemeinsame Entwicklung von Methodik und Modellen stellen wichtige Aspekte im Projekt dar. Es wird eine umfassende Methodik zur integrierten Entwicklung und Bewertung von Energieszenarien erarbeitet und auf Niedersachsen angewendet. Als Grundgerüst werden fünf Zukunftsszenarien für das Zieljahr 2050 entwickelt. Aus den qualitativen Zukunftsszenarien und drei ausgewählten Alternativen werden quantitative Annahmen für die Simulation und Bewertung erstellt. Die Ergebnisse der Simulationen des Systemmodells bilden die Grundlage für die Systembewertung. Definierte Systemzustände für die Transitionsjahre werden simuliert und anschließend mithilfe einer multikriteriellen Bewertungsmethode anhand von Nachhaltigkeitskriterien verglichen.
