Some deep alternative current has begun flowing out of the spiritual adventures and identity struggles of recent generations. Of course, we didn't create the conditions or questions of this new age; we got caught in them. The ground shifted, the old gods departed, the economic and political utopias crumbled, and the traditional answers were washed away. We didn't leave home; home left us. How did a nice Jewish boy from Nebraska become a Buddhist in California? Join Wes "Scoop" Nisker as he takes us on a hilarious, wild ride from West to East and back again in his quest for true self and enlightenment. Combining the best elements of memoir and social commentary, Nisker uses his own story to illuminate the Baby Boomers' roots of spiritual hunger in postwar America. His journey begins in middle America (Nebraska to be exact) in the middle of the twentieth century, travels through the heyday of the Beats and the Hippies, the birth of the modern environmental movement, and winds up in the current epicenter of Buddhism in the West—California. Full of colorful and immediately recognizable figures of art, religion, and popular culture—from Alfred E. Newman to Allen Ginsberg—The Big Bang, the Buddha, and the Baby Boom is a guided tour of both the outer and inner move-ments that have culminated in the growing culture of Western Buddhism—a lasting, vivid picture of how the Baby Boom generation came to be identified with spiritual seeking, how they went about the search, what they have found and created, and what their true legacy is.

All businesses want to do well, but can they also do good? Lloyd Field says yes, and moreover, no business can afford to focus simply on "doing well." Increasingly, public assessment of a business's worth must take into account its consideration of shared human values. That doesn't mean a business can't or should not compete; it means that investing in efforts to build a better society can, on many levels, be an asset. In this book, Field lays out the guidelines for putting social responsibility, both corporate and individual, into practice without sacrificing profits. Drawing from traditional Buddhist teachings, Field shows how, with attention to ethics, skillful means, and corporate responsibility, entrepreneurs and decision-makers can achieve new levels of happiness and security both inside the company and out, while acting as a powerful force for positive global change.

This book is about me! My life! Not my sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, or any one elses just mine. This book is not to offend anyone, find fault with anyone, but to be of help to someone. Its the way I saw things and the things that happened to me. This is a true account of my life as it unfolded day after day month after month and year after year. The things that happened to me as a child, I had no controll over, I was only five years old when I started recalling these things. This is not a pretty story, but never the less a true one. Some of the things I did are not very pleasing to read but I found that I should get them out into the opening for the healing of my life to take place. The words might be of help to someone else. If you ever find yourself in a situation like mine you will know that you are not the only one and that there are many, many people in this world, who carries the same kind tourture on their shoulders. I hope the book will help them get throught the pain, and suffering in their lives. I was embrassed and just plain ashamed for over twenty years myself. In 1995-96 I facilitated a small drug prevention class called (Project Charlie) Chemical Abuse Resolutions Lies in Education. While instructing this class I learned much better how to enjoy my life as it is right now. I learned to be honest with myself. I realized that I had nothing to hide and I made up my mind to share with the world some of the things that had influenced me to do the things that I did. I was inspired to write this true story of my life one day as I was talking to the class about being ashamed and afraid.. Through some of these experiences I learned a valuable lesson, something I will never forget. I know now that no matter how hard life seems to be treating you, you can raise above all your doubts and fears and change your own destiny; and become happy in this life. I say to you if there has been anything in your life to bound you down, cripple you, and stop you from living a good and desent life get rid of it, get it off of your shoulder, dont let it get the best of you, chew it up and spit it out, so you can live a regret free life existence. I was born Alice Fay Joy Young in Henderson (Rusk County) Texas, December 1st. 1944, to a Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Blue) and Corene Young. My mother called me (Titty). My siblings called me Fay. I never liked the name Fay. I dont know why but I never did. Mom said she called me Titty because she was so sick when I was born. She births me while going through metaphase. I was lucky to be born at that time of her life. I couldnt nurse her breast and I was allergic to cows milk, so she had to make me what she called a sugar tit. She had to make it with malted milk. I never did find out how she got that milk, I did wonder from time to time (when she was telling me about my life) how we could afford it; being as poor as we were. I was the last child of thirteen. Her last little curly haired baby girl. (Shed often stated so affectionally). I had a head full of sandy colored curly hair, very light skin, brown eyes and I had my thumb and pointer finger in my mouth when I came out. I know this to be true because, I sucked those two fingers until I was about fifteen years old. I sometimes now curl my thumb and pointer up and put them into my mouth just to see what I got out of them, but they just dont taste the way they did then.

The inner event that awakens Kundalini remains a mystery. In Margaret Dempsey’s case, years of Buddhist meditation, galvanized by a traumatic contact with an attractive man, triggered the “uprising of Shakti.” Her honesty in not attempting to glamorize the awakening attests to its authenticity. The author’s real Self, to which Kundalini eventually brought her, is in evidence from page one, as she describes her upbringing in Catholic Ireland, her days in a boarding school run by nuns, her training as a nurse, and her escape to London, New York and India.

Business and Buddhism explores alternative ways of leading in the aftermath of the Great Recession and the many stories of fraud and greed that emerged. The book explores shifts in business perspectives as more value is placed on soft skills like emotional intelligence and listening, and introduces the reader to the principles in Buddhist philosophy that can be applied in the workplace. Buddhist practices are increasingly understood as spiritual, rather than religious per se. In fact, Buddhism is alternately referred to as a philosophy or psychology. In this book, Marques explores the value of applying the positive psychology of Buddhism to work settings. She outlines the ways in which it offers highly effective solutions to addressing important management and organizational behavior related issues, but also flags up critical areas for caution. For example, Buddhism is non-confrontational, and promotes detachment. How can business leaders negotiate these principles in light of the demands of modern day pressures? The book includes end of chapter questions to promote reflection and critical thinking, and examples of Buddhist leaders in action. It will prove a captivating read for students of organizational behavior, management, leadership, diversity and ethics, as well as business consultants.
