Anti-social behaviour encompasses a broad range of behaviours including nuisance behaviour, intimidation and vandalism. Seventeen per cent of the population perceive high levels of anti-social behaviour in their area, with the young and the less well off being disproportionately affected, at a cost to government agencies of responding to reports of anti-social behaviour in England and Wales of around £3.4 billion per year. This report examines the work of the Home Office's Anti-Social Behaviour Unit set up in 2003 and measures introduced by the Home Office since 1997 to tackle anti-social behaviour, focusing on the impact of three of the most commonly used interventions: warning letters, Acceptable Behaviour Contracts and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders. Using a sample of 893 cases, the report found that the majority of people who received one of these interventions did not re-engage in anti-social behaviour, but there were a number of perpetrators for whom interventions had limited impact, with about 20 per cent of the sample having received 55 per cent of the interventions issued. Recommendations include that the Home Office should undertake formal evaluation of the success of different interventions and the impact of combining these with support services at the local level. International research suggests that preventive programmes, such as education, counselling and training can be a cost effective way of addressing anti-social behaviour.

This book seeks to explain why anti-social behavior, as a focus of political rhetoric, legislative activity and social action, has gained a high profile in Britain in recent years, and it provides a critical examination of current policies of enforcement and exclusion. It also analyzes the thematic elements in the drive against anti-social behavior, within the wider law and order agenda. Public concern about anti-social behavior is real enough, and it remains high on the political agenda. This book will describe the wide range of offensiveness and incivility involved, showing different intensity and causation. It will examine the methods adopted to deal with anti-social behavior and particularly the increasingly managed response orchestrated by the government, and evident in new and recent legislation. These concerns are not confined to Britain, and this book also seeks to situate the growing concern with anti-social behavior with developments in both North America and Europe.

"Neatly and succinctly takes readers through ways to understand and interpret the label of ‘antisocial’ behaviour in a wider context, showing how it is socially, historically and culturally produced as well as understood in professional health and policing or correctional contexts." - Cathy Coleborne, University of Newcastle, Australia "A timely work given the present global shift in the use of social media and violence. Cate Curtis’ book serves as a multinational mini-meta-analytic review of anti-social behaviours" - Richard Langford, University of Hawaii West Oahu "Cate Curtis’ coverage in this book is breath-taking. It is centred on challenging taken for granted assumptions concerning the three Rs: ‘risk’, ‘resilience’ and ‘recovery’ whilst questioning what is respectable everyday activities and extreme behaviour in culture and society." - Shane Blackman, Canterbury Christ Church University Cate Curtis seeks to disrupt assumptions about anti-social behaviour by bringing together a host of key concepts and theories applicable to the field. Going beyond individualised discussions, the book explores broader concepts such as the social construction of ‘anti-social behaviour’, ‘risk’ and ‘resilience’, and the social contents and influences under which these are most likely to occur. An excellent companion for researchers and postgraduate students in of anti-social behaviour across criminology, social psychology, sociology and social work.

Vandalism and Anti-Social Behaviour forwards a new typology of vandalism. The authors argue that in order to fully understand vandalism and anti-social behaviour, a culturally criminological perspective should be fostered, which accounts for the emotional and experiential aspects of crime.

This book is the first comprehensive volume exploring an issue of growing importance to policy makers, academics, housing practitioners and students. It brings together contributions from the most prominent scholars in the field to provide a range of theoretical perspectives, critical analysis and empirical research findings about the role of housing and urban governance in addressing anti-social behaviour. Contributors assess constructions of anti-social behaviour in policy discourse, identify how housing is increasingly central to the governance of anti-social behaviour and critically evaluate a wide range of measures used by housing and other agencies to tackle what is perceived to be a growing social problem. Although the book focuses on the UK, comparative international perspectives are provided from France, Australia and the United States. The book covers definitions of anti-social behaviour and policy responses including key new legislation and the legal role of social landlords in governing anti-social behaviour. There is comprehensive coverage of key measures including eviction, probationary tenancies, Anti-social Behaviour Orders, mediation and Acceptable Behaviour Contracts, and of innovative developments such as gated communities, intensive support services and the use of private security. Housing, urban governance and anti-social behaviour will be of interest to academics, policy-makers, practitioners and students in the fields of housing, urban studies, social policy, legal studies and criminology.
