I have endeavoured to embody in the present edition all such novelties and modifications as experiment have proved to be worthy of notice. The book has been out of print nearly two years, owing to lack of time and the pressure of other matters, so that the necessary experiments for verification of results could not be carried out. I regret that there is still much to be done in the minute examination of individual processes, for it is only by careful detailed investigation of methods that their merits or demerits can be established. The important sections on the Analysis of Potable Waters and Sewage, 76, 77, 78, originally contributed to the second edition by Mr. W. Thorp, B.se., late principal assistant chemist to the Royal Commission on the Pollution of Rivers, have been thoroughly revised, and considerably augmented, by that gentleman.
